Marseille,
FRANCE, September 29: The Foire de Marseille, one of the largest trade
fairs in Europe on the Mediterranean coastline has defied Chinese
pressure and included Tibet as one of its themes for this year’s edition
which is participated by exhibitors from over 50 nations including
China.
The festival allowed Tibetan exhibitors from Paris to hang a gigantic Tibetan national flag atop the Tibetan Village, one of the major attractions of this years festival that is into its ninetieth year. The Tibetan Village at the centre of the venue has been designed by a Paris based Tibetan artist Dorjee Sangpo who also owns the Tibet Art boutique. Dorjee said he took it as an opportunity to showcase the Tibetan culture to the world, and therefore started preparing for it from February this year. “Normally, the managing board of a festival as big as this one don’t allow any representation of politics but this year they allowed us to display the Tibetan national flag underneath the ceiling despite pressure from Chinese participants and the Chinese consulate,” said Sangpo, who migrated to Paris in the nineties after completing his course in Thanka painting at the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives. Visitors which number around 30000 per day get to watch monks from Gaden Jhantse’s Gowo Khangtsen create Sand Mandala, Tibetan artists paining thangka scroll art and also enjoy Tibetan cuisines. The trade festival started on September 26 and will go on until October 6, 2014. Report submitted by Dorjee Sangpo |
